Understanding 'Using Points as Cash' vs 'Points Transfer'

You have two main options for using your credit card points to book flights:

  1. Transferring Points to an Airline Loyalty Program:
You can transfer your credit card points to an airline program and book flights directly through them. This method often provides excellent value for your points, but keep in mind that only a limited number of flights are available this way. The point.me self-serve tool helps you find these options quickly and provides step-by-step guidance for booking.

  2. Using Points as Cash:
Alternatively, most credit card issuers let you redeem your points as “cash” toward travel costs through their travel portals. This method ties the points required directly to the cash price of the airline ticket, making it easy to redeem. Almost any flight you can pay for with cash can also be booked using points.

You can use points as cash with the following credit card issuers:

Each issuer values their points differently for these redemptions. Here’s a quick overview:

  • American Express (U.S.): 1 cent per point*
  • Bilt Rewards: 1 cent per point
  • Capital One: 1 cent per point
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards: 1 cent per point**
  • Citi ThankYou (U.S.): 1 cent per point

*Note: Business Platinum, and Business Centurion cardholders can earn a 35-50% rebate on points redeemed via American Express Travel (terms apply).
**Chase Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred cardholders receive 1.25 cents per point via Chase Travel, while Sapphire Reserve cardholders get 1.5 cents per point.
