What is the difference between “points” and “miles”?

Typically loyalty currencies issued by banks, such as American Express Membership Rewards®, are referred to as “points”, while some airline programs, such as Delta SkyMiles® use the term “miles.”

The name has no bearing on how the currency can be used for booking flights.
